Caen is a city rich in history, offering plenty to explore both within the town itself and throughout the surrounding region. Student life in Caen is also eventful, with nearly 40,000 students living in the city. While your time in Caen as an international student will undoubtedly be rewarding, the initial period can be challenging as you adjust to a new country and establish a daily routine.

Getting started

WRNC has been in contact with Romain Erapa, the president of the Ordre du Phénix association. This is an interdisciplinary student association at the Université de Caen Normandie. It aims to strengthen cohesion among students through various social activities, combat social isolation and support students in precarious situations through food distributions. In addition, the association represents students on the university's various councils.

The president of the association explains that international students can often face some difficulties when they begin their studies. "This includes complex administrative procedures, the language barrier, and especially some difficulty in finding accommodation in Caen", he says.

Erapa recommends that you prepare well in advance, by starting the necessary procedures early (visa, bank account, etc.) and before your arrival. You should look for accommodation as soon as possible. Begin by contacting the International Office (Carré International), the University of Caen's service dedicated to international students. They can assist people with administrative procedures. Erapa also recommends that you take part in the welcome activities that are offered to arriving students.

Housing

Finding accommodation as an international student can often feel overwhelming. In France, landlords typically require a financial guarantor in case you are unable to pay your rent (usually a parent, who might have to sign a document stating they will pay your rent if you are unable to). You will also need housing insurance, known as "assurance d'habitation", which can fortunately be arranged quickly online.

When searching for housing, Erapa's advice is to start as early as possible. He recommends that you collect information from real estate agencies, student residences and, above all, the CROUS (Regional Centre for Student Services).

When searching for accommodation in Caen, you may consult websites and companies such as studapart.com, leboncoin.fr, lacartedescolocs.fr and kley.fr. The CROUS also offers studio apartments, these are often the most affordable option. Be aware, however, that you should apply early to get access to this type of accommodation as it is in high demand.

Student life in Caen

In addition to the Ordre du Phénix, other associations help and host events for international students. These include organisations such as the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Caen. This association usually hosts several events each week, ranging from parties to language cafés, sometimes including excursions to other cities and landmarks in the Normandy region.

In addition, if you are enrolled at an institution other than the Université de Caen, it is worth checking whether your university or school has its own office or association for international students, as they will have access to resources and knowledge specific to your school.

Places to study and work

If you want to explore other places to study besides the library at your own university, it's also worth checking out the Alexis-de-Tocqueville library, by the port. Cafés such as Mémoranda, Keys & Co, and Columbus Café & Co also offer pleasant places to study, meet with friends and enjoy a coffee.

Language

Although many French people speak English, this is not always the case. It is therefore advisable that you learn some basic French before arriving in Caen, as it will be invaluable both in your studies and everyday life.

Many universities and schools also offer French language courses, which are highly recommended if you are not yet at an advanced level.

Bonne chance, we hope you enjoy your studies in Caen!
